What are the advantages of low-code?

You've probably come across the term low-code. It might sound like just another tech buzzword, but at Blue Green Solutions, it's part of our everyday work. We use low-code to streamline workflows, accelerate digital transformation, and help businesses adapt faster.

Still, for many organizations, low-code is a bit of a mystery. What exactly is it? Why should you care? And what makes it so powerful? In this blog, we’ll explore the real value of low-code and how it can make a measurable difference.

What is Low-Code?

Low-code is a modern way to build software without relying heavily on traditional coding. Instead of writing endless lines of code, developers use visual tools, like drag-and-drop components, process flows, and data models—to build applications quickly and efficiently.

Platforms like Mendix, Outsystems, and Betty Blocks are leading the way in this space, offering environments where visual modeling replaces much of the manual coding. This makes software development more accessible, faster, and easier to understand, without compromising on quality.

Low-Code is on the rise

According to Gartner, by 2028, 80% of organizations will be building their core applications using low-code platforms. And it’s easy to see why.

Low-code enables rapid development of robust applications that integrate seamlessly with your existing systems. Because complex code isn’t required, it opens the door for a wider range of people to participate in the development process, from professional developers to technically minded business users.

Thanks to the visual nature of low-code platforms, teams can collaborate more effectively and understand what’s being built in real-time. That leads to better results, faster.

Beyond prototypes: scalable, full-featured apps

One common misconception is that low-code is only suitable for prototyping or building simple tools. That couldn't be further from the truth.

Low-code platforms are capable of delivering large-scale, mission-critical systems, think mobile apps, native apps, and complex enterprise workflows.

A perfect example? PostNL. Handling over 384 million packages a year with 38,000 employees, PostNL runs key operations like shipping, warehouse logistics, and parcel tracking on Mendix, our platform of choice at Blue Green Solutions. The result: efficient workflows, streamlined processes, and major time savings.

If a logistics powerhouse like PostNL trusts low-code for its core operations, it’s safe to say the technology is enterprise-ready.

The key benefits of low-code

Still not sure if low-code is right for you? Here’s what makes it such a strong choice:

1. Faster time to value
Low-code development significantly shortens the time from idea to execution. You can deliver working software in days or weeks, not months.

2. Custom fit for your existing systems
Low-code lets you build flexible, custom applications on top of your core IT systems. Instead of replacing your ERP or legacy software, you extend it, perfect for tailoring processes that don’t quite fit the standard mold.

3. Modernizing Legacy Systems
Gradually replace outdated systems through phased, controlled rollouts. Low-code makes modernization less risky and more manageable.

4. Scalable & adaptable
Whether your organization is growing, downsizing, or facing new regulations, low-code adapts quickly. It’s designed for scalability and agility, helping you respond to change fast.

5. Visual & intuitive
Low-code is easy to grasp. Developers work faster, and end-users can often understand how applications function, thanks to the transparent, visual structure.

6. Transparent & collaborative
Visual building blocks make it easier for stakeholders at all levels to see how an app is constructed. That transparency fosters collaboration, speeds up decision-making, and increases buy-in.

7. Secure by besign
Top-tier low-code platforms like Mendix adhere to the highest security standards, offering built-in features like role-based access, encryption, and audit trails. You get peace of mind without needing extra security tooling.

8. Easier handover
Because applications are visually structured and well-documented, it's simpler to transfer projects between teams or onboard new developers.

The truth about citizen development

You’ll often hear the term citizen development associated with low-code. It suggests that non-developers, like business analysts or project managers, can build their own apps.

We believe that vision holds promise, but it also needs nuance. While low-code lowers technical barriers, building a solid application still requires an understanding of structure, data modeling, scalability, and security.

That’s why at Blue Green Solutions, we make a distinction: not everyone needs to build apps from scratch. Instead, we focus on empowering domain experts to co-create, offering input, identifying opportunities, and working closely with our team to shape digital solutions that work.

The real strength of low-code? It lies in better collaboration between business and IT. You know where the bottlenecks are, we know how to turn that insight into a working solution using platforms like Mendix.

Smarter together

So no, low-code doesn’t mean “everyone becomes a developer.” But it does mean we can develop faster and smarter, together.

Heading

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
