How can healthcare organizations use low-code and AI to reduce administrative workload? And how do you ensure digital solutions move beyond the pilot stage and deliver real value in everyday healthcare operations?
On October 6, Blue Green Solutions, Mendix, and Tacstone Technology brought together professionals from elderly care, mental healthcare, disability care, and rehabilitation in Amsterdam. During an interactive roundtable, we explored the challenges and opportunities of digitalization in healthcare, combining real-world use cases, innovative solutions, and plenty of room to exchange experiences.
During the afternoon, Jan Willem Alst from Goudenhart shared their experiences with digitalizing healthcare processes. Sander Terhorst from Tacstone Technology demonstrated Planwise, an intelligent workforce scheduling solution, while Eric Weijers from Blue Green Solutions showed how healthcare organization Welthuis used Mendix to gain better control over patient intake and waiting list management.
Together with Abel Verweg from Mendix, participants explored several important questions. How do you balance employee preferences with patients' needs? How can you build trust in new technologies? And which processes are better managed outside your existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) system?
The discussions revealed several valuable insights that many healthcare organizations will recognize:
1. AI Requires Trust
AI can support patient communication, but technology alone won't convince employees. Demonstrate which problems AI solves and involve the people who will actually use it.
2. Good Processes Come First
Digitalization starts with understanding how a process works. Clear workflows, data privacy, and process ownership are just as important as the technology itself.
3. Smarter Scheduling Creates More Room for Employees
Intelligent algorithms can take over much of the complexity of workforce scheduling, considering care demands, labor agreements, and personal preferences. This reduces manual planning while allowing planners to remain in control.
4. Registration Is Not the Same as Process Management
An EHR system contains valuable patient information but doesn't always provide sufficient support for waiting list management and patient placements. A complementary application can provide the overview and process coordination needed in daily operations.
One thing became clear throughout the discussions: successful digitalization isn't just about technology. It's about the people, processes, and decisions behind it.
